League Of Legends Mobile Game Under Development By Riot And Tencent

league of legends 100 millionBack when MOBA was king, the genre was dominated by games like DOTA, Heroes of Newerth, and League of Legends. Over the past few years we’ve seen a steady decline in the popularity and the playerbase of MOBAs as survival sandbox, and more recently, battle royale games started to take over the market. Today, MOBAs are still pretty popular but are now mostly played on mobile devices especially in Asia, an idea that Riot Games rejected a few years back.

Apparently, Riot Games has had a change of heart and have even put old rivalries aside to work on a mobile version of League of Legends alongside Tencent Games. Both studios have long been at odds with each other ever since Tencent developed a LoL-like mobile game called Honour of Kings back in 2015. The game was exclusively-released in China and went on to become “the world’s highest grossing multiplayer online battle arena game,” says Reuters. Tencent later released a global adaptation of the game called “Arena of Valor” further straining the two companies’ relationship.

According to Reuters sources, however, the two studios have been working together on a mobile League of Legends game for well over a year. Unfortunately, another source says that it’s unlikely that the game will launch within the year. While the game is likely to be more popular in Asia than in the West, the popularity of League of Legends with Western gamers might just give it the foundation it needs to compete on this side of the globe.

We’re still waiting for Riot and Tencent to release details of the game, which, according to the sources are still strictly confidential. We’ll keep you posted.
