German indie development studio Keen Games, the studio behind popular voxel MMO Portal Knights, has raised $10 million in investments in a Series B funding round led by Tencent and Hiro Capital.

According to Keen Games, the funds will be used to develop a spiritual successor to Portal Knights that will feature a cross-platform sandbox world with more realistic visuals and city-building elements. The untitled project is slated for release sometime in 2023.

“We are incredibly excited to start a brand new chapter for Keen Games with the development of our next title and transition to a self-publishing studio,” said Keen Games CEO Jan Joeckel in the official press release.

“From the first moments playing their game prototype, we knew that they were on track to bottle lightning again and build upon the success of Portal Knights, a game that has been played and enjoyed by millions of people around the world,” said Hiro Capital Co-Founder Cherry Freeman.
