Here's How Construction Works In Dark And Light

With Dark and Light's Steam Early Access launch slowly drawing ever nearer, Snail Games has decided to unveil some details about its construction systems. Players will be given the ability to construct their base "virtually anywhere they want in the world." They will be able to construct their veritable fortresses out of anything from straw, wood, and stone to metal, or "giant castle-sized components."
As with other survival games, you will start out gathering materials with the simplest of tools, your hands. Over time, you will need to not only craft "more advanced tools," but also increase your magic skills to be able to "extract rare, valuable elements for high-tier building materials." Additionally, certain materials can only be crafted with "a workbench or magic workbench," so obtaining them early is important.
Because fortresses cost quite a bit of money, players can create "preview" materials that can be used to construct the exact fortress in an inexpensive manner before committing time and resources to constructing the fortress.
Players that don't feel like building their own bases can purchase a house in the city and defend said city from invaders by "constructing unique magical fortifications." Additionally, each city has its own unique style of architecture that players can emulate in their own settlements.
As an added bonus, you can get an early look at gameplay in Dark and Light, courtesy of MMORPG.com's Ripper, who stopped by the Snail Games office in Los Angeles recently.
