It’s been a rough year for the video game industry with layoffs happening in seemingly every other video game company and studio. The latest studio to succumb to financial pressures is Elite Dangerous developer Frontier Developments, who’ve announced their plans to hand an unknown number of employees their pink slips.

The upcoming layoffs are in line with the studio’s efforts to reduce its annual operating costs by up to 20% by restructuring its workforce to remove redundant positions. The studio’s higher-ups cite the poor performance of F1 Manager 2023 as the reason behind their financial woes.

It’s unclear whether the layoffs will have a direct impact on the development of Elite Dangerous, although the sci-fi space MMO’s community might not even notice a difference considering how far apart the updates have been getting over the past few years. Regardless, the news is still a cause for concern, particularly among those who are still actively playing the game.

Meanwhile, Update 17 went live in the space simulator earlier this week with a whole host of new quality-of-life features and gameplay improvements. You can check out the full patch notes here.
