Discord Voice Chat Is Now Available For Testing On Xbox

Discord is coming to consoles, or at least to Xbox anyway, as one of the most popular chat app starts testing its voice chat feature on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Members of the Xbox Insiders program can now start chatting up their PC and Xbox buddies on Discord, but it won’t be as simple as clicking a button to join a voice channel.

First, you’ll have to link your Xbox account to Discord which requires a one-time authorization. You’ll then need to join the voice channel through your mobile device’s Discord app and select “Join on Xbox”. This will open your Xbox app. On the Xbox app, tap on “Transfer Audio” then go back to the Discord app and select “Transfer Voice to This Device”. Once that’s done, you can finally talk through the actual console.

It’s a lot of trouble to join a voice chat and you’ll probably need to repeat the process when joining a different voice channel or when rebooting your Xbox. But, it’s should be better than juggling multiple devices and headphones just so you can voice chat with your friends on Discord while playing.

Unfortunately for PlayStation users, it looks like you won’t be getting the feature anytime soon. Although, it’s probably safe to assume that the feature will eventually come to the PlayStation, considering that Sony already owns a minority share in Discord, just not today or maybe not even within the year.

A dedicated app that will eliminate the need for all those steps would also be great. For now, you can register for the Xbox Insider program to get access to the new feature.
