Phoenix Labs announced their Monster Hunter-like PC game Dauntless last month, and today Polygon has shared some exclusive gameplay footage, showing players tackling fearsome beasts called Behemoths. You can see the two videos below.

Like Monster Hunter, players band together from cities and head into the wilderness to hunt Dungeons and Dragons inspired beasts, such as the bearish-owl called the Shrike.

Developer Jesse Houston told VentureBeat:

“Anecdotal story about D&D. [Dauntless’s] code-name was Archon, because everything we do at the studio is named after different monsters from the D&D5th Edition [Monster] Manual,” Houston said with a laugh. “We just use it for naming conventions. The website is Basilisk, and the telemetry service is Chimera.”

Dauntless will be free-to-play when it releases, and Phoenix Labs told Polygon that their game is nearing Closed Alpha testing, with a release planned for later 2017.

You can sign up for a chance to play—in the future—by visiting the Dauntless website.
