Blizzard Entertainment Acquires Proletariat, Spellbreak Sunsetting In Early 2023

Spellbreak developer Proletariat has been acquired by Blizzard Entertainment to bolster the World of Warcraft development team. According to VentureBeat, all 100 employees of the Boston-based studio will be working on Blizzard’s popular MMORPG including the upcoming Dragonflight expansion.
“A big part of caring for our teams is making sure we have the resources to produce experiences our communities will love while giving our teams space to explore even more creative opportunities within their projects,” said Blizzard Entertainment President Mike Ybarra. “Proletariat is a perfect fit for supporting Blizzard’s mission in bringing high-quality content to our players more often.”
As for Spellbreak, the spell-casting battle royale game will be shutting down in early 2023 less than two years after its initial launch on PC, consoles, and Nintendo Switch. “We are grateful to everyone in the game’s community for exploring the magical worlds and experiences we created together,” said Proletariat. “Spellbreak was an ambitious project that saw our team push new boundaries in design and development and we are excited to continue to innovate as we create new titles in the future.”
