Activision Blizzard Q1 2021 Financials Show Increase In Revenue As Blizzard MAU’s Continue To Drop
Activision Blizzard has just published their latest quarterly financial report which offers some interesting bits of information about how the company is doing. The Q1 2021 report shows a 7% increase in Blizzard’s revenue year-over-year but also a significant drop in player numbers.
Blizzard’s playerbase has taken another big hit, dropping by 27% over the past three years according to MassivelyOP. According to the report, Blizzard had 27 million Monthly Active Users in the first quarter of 2021 compared to 38 million in the first quarter of 2018. The decline can probably be attributed to the lack of new games and IPs. Fortunately, the company can look forward to Diablo IV to pull in more players, along with Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft Classic’s The Burning Crusade expansion.
Meanwhile, the Activision side of the company saw a 72% growth in revenue largely due to Call of Duty: Warzone continued popularity in addition to the recent release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. King Entertainment also saw a 22% revenue increase year-over-year thanks to the recent updates to their widely-popular mobile puzzle game, Candy Crush.
“Our employees continue to demonstrate exceptional performance under challenging circumstances,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. “That relentless drive across our franchises produced strong first quarter results that were well ahead of expectations. Our continued overperformance enables us to raise our outlook for the full year.”
