A Brief Look At The Magic Of Dark And Light

January has officially come and gone without the release of Dark and Light. They said it wouldn't happen last month, but now that it actually hasn't happened, the weight of it is really starting to sink in. Instead, we are still getting scraps of information about Dark and Light whilst simultaneously being drip fed 15 seconds of gameplay at a time. Today, we have been given a brief look at the magic of Dark and Light.
You see, Dark and Light takes place on a planet known as "Alpha" in a small region known as "The Sacred Path." The Sacred Path is "the center of magic," a place where elemental magic literally "courses through the landscape causing wild fluctuations in the structure of the land and the environment." These fluctuations lead to "the rapid emergence of" various phenomena, such as floating islands, snow-capped mountains, and even "a massive active volcano."
In all, there are a total of 25 "unique" locations within The Sacred Path. Each of the 25 locations has its own "[ecosystem], creatures, weather patterns, and harvestable resources."
As there are 25 locations, you will likely want an easy way to travel across them. Players have three core options: tame a mount, create teleportation portals at key locations that they want to travel to, or use magic to turn into a creature that is "optimized for quick long-distance travel."
But back to magic. Within the world of Dark and Light, magic can be used for almost everything. You can use magic to "forge weapons and tools," the former of which can be imbued with magical power. You can use it to fight creatures and other players. You can use it to travel the map. Some magic lets you "transform into powerful beasts." You can even use magic to construct bases and later fortify them.
One of the key sources of magic will be creatures. Players can "extract elemental magic from select beings," given that they don't want to summon them as thralls. They will need to be careful, though, as creatures located in "certain areas" can be transformed by the magic around them, giving them "a huge boost of power and new abilities."
And...that's all we've got. You can find another 15 seconds of gameplay in the video embedded below.
