5 Reasons Why MMOs Are A Student's Best Friend

With back to back projects, presentations, and the impending doom of finals season looming over their heads many students are bound to be searching for some form of relief to keep themselves from going insane. What better way is there to get some much needed and deserved rest and relaxation other than letting loose in an MMO, and here’s why!

1. You get to relieve your stress on monsters or other players:

What better way to handle all the stress built up from homework and exams than to go beat something up. In any game with PvP there is nothing more satisfying than the sweet taste of victory when you’ve beaten an opponent. In the MMO world you can be rough without causing any real physical injury so it's definitely a great workaround!

2. You can socialize with others on a different level:

School can be tough so sometimes it's nice to chat with some random person about something completely and utterly irrelevant. Socializing in an MMO, whether it be with a guild mate or a random party member, is definitely a great way to take a break from constant study thoughts! You’re bound to have some horror stories to share if you’re fresh out of a final. In Tera Online my group of friends and I created a guild called Bliss, which helped us build meaningful friendships that still exist even now. The bonds I’ve made with people has given me a group that understands exactly why I need to go de-stress with some PvP and they’re always ready to back me up!

3. Sometimes you need some fantasy to keep the creativity going:

As students we tend to fall prey into the mainstream mentality that is shoved upon us by “the man.” Playing MMOs is a great way to remind yourself that you shouldn't lose touch with the creative and mysterious aspects of the world. If you’re in need of a creative outlet, games like Second Life are great for making your imagination come to life with its seemingly endless options to help you build your character and environment. If you’re not into the do-it-yourself kind of aspect you can take part in some of my favorite activities like visiting art galleries or places like the Hobo Amusement Park, which were created by other users. Every person in Second Life has the chance to make a dream place or experience the creativity of another!

4. You get to have an experience without the excess cost:

(Unless you’re someone who enjoys a lot of cash shop perks.) Since there are plenty of free to play MMOs playing one is a cheap activity choice. As students you’re probably trying to watch where your funds go so playing an MMO is definitely an opportunity to have fun without spending big bucks. One of my top free to play choices is Trove because of its unique world and creative gameplay. For the cost of absolutely nothing you're able to explore a block-style world that has plenty of exciting dungeon-like areas laid out around the maps for you to take on by yourself or with other players. You also get to make your own little base to plot all your domination of the Trove world. All of this for the low, low cost of nothing. This is definitely a deal that a students shouldn't miss out on!

5. MMOs are just plain fun:

Is there really any better way to spend your time? We, as students, are always caught up in situations that can make us delirious and question our life choices right at the peak of our stress. It’s times like that when MMOs become even more fun because you’ve reached a point where you’ll appreciate all the things you can do in them even more. In the world of MMOs there aren’t many limitations that’ll keep you from enjoying yourself as there are entire worlds at your disposal. There are giant monsters that you can smack around for some treasures, PvP that can leave you with the sweet taste of victory, and countless friends waiting to share your burdens. With all the features that help make MMOs unique these types of games are definitely one of the best sources of enjoyment that a student has at their disposal.

I've been playing MMOs since the initial release of Flyff back in 2005. From then I've tried MMOs of all kinds and always get hooked to wonderful freedom that they can provide as new lands are uncovered. I still like to explore all the different games but right now I'm focused on Blade&Soul(TW) and Tera Online.
