Happy Aprils Fools Day!

If you've read anything on the site today and been fooled by our posts then Happy April Fools day! Yes I enjoy going overboard—and Omer's video editing skills say he does as well. I couldn't be happier to hear that you got-got.

I didn't want to eat anymore space than the frontpage allows so that's why we're stopping here. We only fool on April 1st, anything prior or after is legitimate. I hope you all have a laugh and enjoy the rest of your day. We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

On a bonus note, the best part about today? MMOGeeks.com, a website that copy and pastes articles from other sites, made sure to spread the word by posting each of our articles as if they were serious news. Feels good.

Here are some of the best responses we got from around the MMO commenting sphere so far (click the image to scroll through, or wait for it to fade):

I’m excited to share that the Chinese conglomerate Tencent Games has officially purchased MMOs.com for an undisclosed amount. This deal has been under wraps for some time, but we weren’t able to share it with our readers until today. Tencent is a tremendous company and one of the largest in the world, owning IPs such as League of Legends, and we are proud to be part of the Tencent family.

I want to assure our readers of our commitment to unbiased rewriting of press releases, editorial freedom, and journalistic integrity. We will not be affected in any matter by being owned by one of the world’s largest game publishers.

I want to add that the traditional MMOs.com team is being relocated to Shenzhen, China to work on an undisclosed project, though we can share that it will be a clicker title.

MMOs.com has a new editorial team as of today, and will continue to produce the high quality and entertaining content our readership has come to expect. No matter who works under our site’s banner, we are committed to the highest standards of game’s press criticism.

Journey To Un'Goro In Hearthstone On April 6th

The next Hearthstone expansion, Journey to Un'Goro, will go live on April 6th for both mobile and PC devices. Over 135 new cards will be available to collect and use. And the expansion marks the beginning of the Year of the Mammoth.

The expansion introduces Quest cards, unique legendary cards that have requirements to be completed; finish them and you earn "incredible rewards."

There's a new keyword called Adapt, which lets you discover minion traits, one of ten: "Similar to the discover mechanic, you will be presented with three options when you play a card with Adapt. You can choose one of these three options to immediately buff your minion."

If you've been playing Hearthstone you should be receiving Year of the Mammoth daily rewards, which will be given out until April 5th, culminating in a Volcanosaur card.

You can pre-purchase 50 packs already, for $49.99, or wait until the expansion launches and start earning cards the old-fashioned way.

Command A Ship With Your Friends In Elite Dangerous Around April 16th

The next update for Elite Dangerous, Commanders 2.3, will go live the week ending April 16th, adding the ability to fly multi-crewed ships. Up to 3 players will assume roles aboard a vessel—or they can be passengers—where the ship's owner is automatically the pilot, and the two passengers can either be gunners or fighter cons.

2.3 also marks the introduction of avatar customization using HoloMe, moving a bunch of sliders to make the perfect you. While players can't walk around with their avatar, they will be able to use a new camera to view the entire ship: outside, inside, from the thrusters, etc.

Remember, the update will be live the week of April 16th. Will you be flying with buddies?

Infographic: The Chinese Takeover Of Western Game Studios

In the last couple of years it's become apparent that Chinese companies have their eyes on Western game studios: Jagex (Runescape) was bought by a Chinese mining company, Riot Games (League of Legends) is owned by Tencent, and we discovered that Snail Games scooped up Studio Wildcard (Ark: Survival Evolved). Back in 2016, analytics firm Superdata Research predicted that "Chinese companies will scoop up 1-2 western publishers a month from here on."

It can be tough to keep track of who owns what, so we've compiled an infographic explaining the major purchases; scroll down just a bit. What you'll notice is that many Chinese companies are not involved in the technology sector, but exist in other industries such as farming or mining, and are expanding into video games by scooping up Western studios. And they show no sign of slowing down.

If you want some of the surprising highlights, Tencent owns not just Riot, but also 40% of Epic Games and 84% of Supercell (Clash of Clans). Meanwhile Leyou Technologies (a poultry and farm distributor) owns 96% of Digital Extremes (Warframe) and Splash Damage (Dirty Bomb and Wolfenstein).

Are you surprised by any of of the studios listed below? Or are you already in the know. What major studio will be bought by a Chinese company next? Maybe Tencent is looking over Blizzard.

Oculus Designer Palmer Luckey Leaves Facebook

Oculus VR founder, and designer of the Rift, Palmer Luckey is leaving Facebook but it's not clear whether the departure is voluntary or not. Facebook spoke to UploadVR and told the site that tomorrow, Friday, is Palmer's last day with the company.

“Palmer will be dearly missed. Palmer’s legacy extends far beyond Oculus. His inventive spirit helped kickstart the modern VR revolution and helped build an industry. We’re thankful for everything he did for Oculus and VR, and we wish him all the best.”

Maybe this shouldn't be too much of a surprise. While Luckey had been a vocal spokesman for virtual reality he disappeared after the Daily Beast revealed Luckey's involvement with Nimble America, a pro-Trump "Meme Machine." Though Luckey denied much of his involvement.

The Luck has run out.

World Of Warcraft Mobs Scale With Item Level, Players Ain't Happy

World of Warcraft players are a bit upset to learn that level 110 mobs scale with their gear score, after a revealing post on the WoW forums by game director Ion Hazzikostas, aka Watcher. The change was not announced, or included in the patch notes, and was intended to have a subtle impact. Healers noticed.

As of right now, scaling seemingly needs to be tweaked, as players in top-shelf gear feel an underwhelming sense of power, the exact opposite sensation you want after dungeon stomping for epic loot. As of this writing, it's an advantage to take off your gear before fighting a mob, to weaken it thanks to the item level scaling.

The WoW team intends to tweak this issue, and Watcher explained at length the thought process behind the change: keeping world content meaningful (since it plays such a large role in Legion) by preventing players from mindlessly rolling through content with top-tier gear.

The intent of our change in 7.2 was to smooth out that progression curve a bit, not flatten it out, and certainly never to invert it. If you get a great set of item upgrades that make you 5% stronger, maybe the world gets 1-2% tougher. Perhaps instead of getting 400% stronger over the course of the expansion relative to the outdoor world, you only get 250% stronger. But you should always be getting more powerful in relative terms, and upgrades should always matter. From some reactions so far, it sounds like we may be off on that tuning. And as noted above, the fact that unequipping items can ever be helpful is a bug that we'll be investigating and fixing. -Watcher

Bless KR Gets A Content Update, Bless NA Still MIA

The Korean version of Bless will be receiving a big ol' content update starting on April 11th (and a big ol' infographic along with it, in Korean), with the introduction of a new dungeon called the Urdata War Fortress. Thanks to MassivelyOP for bringing this news to our attention. Bless has not done well in Korea, having undergone several server mergers due to a dwindling playerbase, and it looks like this update is hoping to reel some players back in.

Of course, we have extremely limited information regarding the Western release of Bless, under the reclusive banner of Aeria Games. The publisher has again-and-again stressed that they're waiting for Neowiz to overhaul the combat system to bring it in line with Western expectations.

Well, we all played Bless here at MMOs.com, multiple times, and I don't know what needs to be fixed. Bless has fine tab-targeting combat system as is, along with a beautiful soundtrack composed by Hans Zimmer. And changing a game's core mechanic ripples into every other area of gameplay: if a game's dungeon is designed for tab-targeting, how does overhauling to a more action-combat oriented system disturb balance and gameplay? Maybe that's the problem.

Since it doesn't look like we'll be playing Bless in the West anytime soon, you can give it a try on the Russian servers. We have a guide all set up if you want to know how to install and play Bless RU (with an English Patch. And if you're still a little hesitant you can check out our gameplay of a dungeon run below.
