EverQuest will be turning 21 next month and Executive Producer Holly “Windstalker” Longdale can’t be more excited. In her latest Producer’s Letter, Longdale talks about the future of the game and a new feature coming to the classic MMORPG.
“Can you believe EverQuest is entering its third decade? 21 years old this year! For this year’s anniversary in mid-March this year, we are releasing a new feature that has been a passion project for us that should enhance the lives of many around Norrath. We call it ‘Overseer.’
As an Overseer, you will be able to send out agents that you earn on Overseer Quests to gain rewards. This new system is designed to help players catch up to current content by giving access to rewards that are found in past content. Its goal is to help you build up your characters faster. Overseer is accessible starting at level 85 and with its launch we will grant all members a free level 85 heroic character. More details on Overseer will be coming very soon.”
Longdale also talks about the status of the new progression servers. “Not today!” writes Longdale. “But we are planning to launch in late spring/early summer. We have some work to do on tech and game health overall as well as fully rounding out the rule sets before we can launch them.” According to Longdale, work also includes merging a few servers in preparation for the new ones.
Stormhaven Studios has just published new Alpha gameplay footage featuring small-group content in Saga of Lucimia. In the hour-long video, the developers walk fans through the benefits of playing as a group. Aside from obviously being stronger as a group, members also get bonus skill points for simply being part of the group.
“For every additional person in your group, there is a bonus to how quickly your abilities progress in the mastery lines. So when you're by yourself, there is a baseline for how quickly your skills are progressing. And then the more people you have in your group, the faster you will gain skill points for those abilities, and your masteries will thus level up more quickly.”
The developers also show off combat and other in-game content as they travel away from the safety of towns and cities in the upcoming high-fantasy MMORPG. You can watch the entire thing after the jump. Saga of Lucimia’s Closed Alpha Stage 3 is scheduled for April 3rd and pre-orders will be back up on March 18th.
Since last year, ZeniMax Online Studios has been working hard to optimize The Elder Scrolls Online and make sure that it “runs as best as it possibly can.” Following the release of Update 25, which includes the Patching Overhaul, the developers are now moving on to server and client optimization.
Update 26, scheduled to roll out in Q2 2020, will feature server-side updates which should improve the performance of non-combat pets and player character loading. On the client side, multi-threading will be used to make asset loading and character drawing more efficient, along with improvements to the effects manager and how AoE abilities are handled.
Update 27 will be rolling out in Q3 2020 and will focus on improving the database by introducing Database Caching and Database Worker Optimizations to prioritize critical game functions. The developers will also be rolling out an Account Database “Cold Storage” feature with either Update 27 or Update 28.

CCP Games has officially announced that they will be cancelling EVE Fanfest 2020 following news of the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Iceland. The event was scheduled to run from April 2nd to April 4th in Reykjavik, Iceland. Here’s the full announcement:
“In light of the recent and ongoing global developments surrounding the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, we have taken the decision to cancel this year’s Fanfest event in Reykjavik, Iceland.
It is with a heavy heart that we make this decision, and we know this news will be disappointing to our wonderful community, but we feel absolutely compelled to follow the most responsible course of action and prioritize the safety and well-being of our attendees, our staff and of course the general Icelandic public.
We realize that the situation a month from now could be very different, but the way events are developing both globally and in Iceland’s neighboring countries, an in-depth and serious review has made it clear that this is a necessary step to take.
We wanted to get this information to you as swiftly as possible in order to allow you to make the necessary changes to any travel or accommodation arrangements that you may have made. We will be providing further details over the course of the next few weeks, so please keep an eye on all EVE Online social media channels for these updates.”
The list of companies that have backed out of next month’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco continues to grow as the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to spread around the world. This has forced the GDC organizers to postpone the event despite yesterday’s claims that everything was moving forward according to plan.
“After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March,” said the organizers. “Having spent the past year preparing for the show with our advisory boards, speakers, exhibitors, and event partners, we’re genuinely upset and disappointed not to be able to host you at this time.”
GDC will be re-scheduled for later this summer. The decision to push back the event follows hot on the heels of Blizzard Entertainment’s announcement that they were backing out from the event due to the threat of the novel coronavirus.
Several other big-name video game companies have also announced their withdrawal from the event over the past few days, including Amazon, Electronic Arts, Facebook, and Sony Interactive Entertainment. The San Francisco Department of Public Health has also recently declared a local health emergency to better prepare city residents for a possible outbreak.
