Aion is a fantasy themed MMORPG developed and published by the South Korean studio NCSoft. Aion originally launched as a pay to play MMORPG in 2009, but later dropped its subscription and became free to play. In the video above, I created a character and ran around for a bit commenting on the early game experience. Despite its age, Aion remains popular and is a great example of a subscription based MMORPG gone free to play that saw great success. Tera is another solid example of a pay to play game doing free to play and succeeding.
