Gravity Teases Ragnarok R - Is It A New Title Or An Already Existent Mobile Game?

Gravity's YouTube page posted a cryptic video that may point to a new title called Ragnarok R, or it may just be an already released game. The video is a hand wielding a pencil drawing the Ragnarok logo and then throwing an "R" underneath. What does that "R" stand for?

Steparu points out the "R" may mean "Revival" which would indicate an already existent Ragnarok mobile game called "Ragnarok Revival:" is a mobile side-scroller already available in Thailand and China. And you can see videos of gameplay by heading to YouTube or watching this one here. It's not too exciting. The theory would run that Gravity Korea is planning to bring the game to their audience. But I don't think that's the full story.

When you compare the Revival "R" with the one featured in the video, they don't match. The slogan "NEW BEGINNING" on the YouTube video leads me to believe a separate title is in the works. Or, an overhaul of the existing Ragnarok Online.

Gravity knows that Ragnarok classic is their money-maker. But the steam from mobile games in China and abroad can only keep them afloat for so long. Maybe Gravity is planning to pump out an overhauled Ragnarok Online Classic. Or the "R" just stands for Renewal and is part of a campaign to promote Ragnarok Online's Renewal Server. Though I'm placing my chips in the former. My guess is Gravity is going to pump out another RO project, one more in-line with the version players loved exploring on private servers.

Whatever the "R" in Ragnarok R means, the one safe bet is that the Ragnarok Online IP isn't disappearing any time soon.

Ragnarok Manhwa Artist Involved In New Mobile RPG Soul Ark

Ragnarok manhwa artist Lee Myung-jin is reportedly lead artist for a new mobile RPG called Soul Ark, according to MMOCulture. The two-dimensional seemingly turn-based game has an endearing style: colorful characters and kawaii monsters.

From the trailer below, you can see that there's constant animation; figures bob like their attached to puppet-strings to keep the eyes entertained. I rather like the transition between battles, watching your characters soar from one stage to the next for seamless progression.

There's little information to share about Soul Ark beyond what can be viewed in the game's trailer. It's a safe bet we'll learn more when G-Star 2016 kicks off in November. Until then you can always go back to Ragnarok Online or read up on the manga to immerse yourself in Lee Myung-jin's artwork.

See Ragnarok Mobile In Action In New Trailer

Interested in seeing what Ragnarok Mobile, the upcoming mobile version of Ragnarok Online being developed by Chinese company Xindong, looks like in action? You're in luck, as MMOCulture has uncovered a new video that gives us a brief, 30 second look at the title. Unlike many mobile titles, Ragnarok Mobile has been built from the ground up to remain true to the original game's formula and it seems to show.

You can find the video embedded below. According to MMOCulture, the title will be entering Beta sometime in the next few weeks.

New Ragnarok Online Mobile Gameplay Trailer Released

Eager to see more of the mobile version of Ragnarok Online that is releasing in China this year? MMOCulture found a new trailer showing off the game's core gameplay. The game seems to be more of a direct translation of Ragnarok Online's gameplay to mobile devices than previous mobile spin-offs have been.

New renditions of each of the game's starter classes have been revealed alongside the new trailer. You can find both the images and the trailer embedded below.

Ragnarok Online Shutting Down In China

Ragnarok Online will be shutting down in China on February 19th,as reported by MMOCulture. It's interesting to note that since it's 2003 Chinese release RO passed between three separate publishers, most recently Kalends (or Kunlun Games) in 2013. RO continues to be popular elsewhere in the world, most notably in Japan. China's closure isn't necessarily a signal that the game will shut down elsewhere. In the United States RO continues to be popular through private servers.

The shut down is notable as back in July a new Chinese-mobile version of Ragnarok Online was teased at Chinajoy 2015. Information is scarce and it's not clear that the project is still in development; although the website does continue to operate. The game was slated for release sometime in 2016.

The mobile Ragnarok Online game appears to be a direct port of the PC version, in contrast to previously released RO inspired mobile games, with updated visuals and a static camera. It's possible that Ragnarok Online could find new life on mobile in China in the future.

Ragnarok Online Adds New Kitty Race

Classic MMORPG, Ragnarok Online, has unveiled the addition of a new race— a first since the game's beginnings in 2002. The new race is called the Doram and they sport a more furry quality seen in a lot of modern MMOs— now you can actually play a cat person in official Ragnarok Online! The new race will have its own starting continent with completely new areas, monsters and drops to enjoy— I mean seriously... look at this Egg Poring and why did it take over 10 years for him to exist?

Ragnarok Online is a 3D fantasy MMORPG with an isometric camera developed and published by Gravity Interactive (WarpPortal). It is one of the most iconic MMORPGs from South Korea and features some of the best music in any video game. The Ragnarok Online soundtrack was composed by SoundTeMP and Hankook Recording with some of the music produced by NEOCYON. The Soundcloud embed features all of the BGMs, tracks, and music from the Ragnarok Online Soundtrack. The game originally launched as a subscription based title in North America in 2003, but later became free to play. SoundTeMP's work on the Ragnarok soundtrack made them famous; they composed the music for Tree of Savior as well, widely regarded by many as the true successor to Ragnarok Online.
