Racist Rant Ends Overwatch Pro Player’s Career

overwatch cinematicTrash-talking has been a part of every game, whether it’s football, basketball, or a first-person shooter like Overwatch. It’s tolerated to some extent but there are certain limits. Calling someone a noob is okay, calling someone a different N-word is not, especially during a live stream. Toronto Esports player Matt “Dellor” Vaughn learns this lesson the hard way.

Dellor was recorded repetitively screaming the N-word for an awkwardly long 26 seconds, during an Overwatch live stream. As could be expected, the video found its way to YouTube, effectively ending Dellor’s E-sports career. Toronto Esports writes:

“Toronto Esports has today announced the release of Matt ‘Dellor’ Vaughn from their organization, citing breach of contract. The circumstances of the dismissal relate to an incident where Dellor used abusive and discriminatory racial language while streaming. ‘Toronto Esports is an organization built on inclusivity, and we have always had a zero- tolerance policy for any forms of discrimination.’ Said President Ryan Pallett. ‘Immediately upon learning of the incident, the player was interviewed, admitted to the offence, and was notified that his contract with the organization was being terminated.’”

Dellor responded with a written apology:

“I fucked up and deserve to be dropped from Toronto Esports, I won't try to argue or make an excuse, I don't have any. I just want people to know what happened. I was having a really bad day. Didn't get much sleep, twitch wouldn't work for 2 hours after I woke up, and once it finally did, my internet was lagging. So I was pretty upset from the moment I woke up.

Then I get into a game against a widowmaker who is blatantly cheating. Everything was whatever, I've dealt with cheaters before, but when him and his entire team, and MY entire team start talking shit, it gets to me. I snapped. This isn't the first time this has happened. I have anger problems.
The only thing I can say is that despite me using that word, I am not a racist. I was extremely upset, and I was trying to make the person I was angry with upset as well, and so I said the most offensive thing that came to mind.

I fucked up, I have no excuse. Toronto Esports is a great organization and I am sorry to them for tarnishing their name. I've put my entire life into gaming/esports and this has been a massive wake up call.”

His Twitch channel has also been deactivated for violating the terms of service. You can watch the video in question after the break.

Jagex Acting CEO Talks About Their Experiences Under Chinese Company

It’s been nearly a year since Jagex and their flagship game RuneScape was acquired by the Chinese company Fukong Interactive Entertainment. So how are things fairing over at Jagex? Well, if their newly refurbished offices are any indication, they seem to be doing quite well. Jagex COO and Acting CEO Phil Mansell sits down with Game Industry’s Christopher Dring to talk about their experiences with Fukong.

"I get asked quite a lot: 'You were bought by a big Chinese company. Are you ok?' But it has actually been a... well, relief sounds a bit rude. It's been empowering.

[Fukong] want us to grow, of course, and they're being supportive. But they are not looking for some crazy, transformative, risky things. They want us to focus on what we're good at. They've looked at RuneScape and said you can do more with that. Can you make more games? Yeah, we can. Can we work on multiple platforms? Yes. It is a measured approach and the right things to be doing. I feel we are in a good place now. . .”

Mansell also said that, “[Fukong] is building a gaming group and we are going to be the hub of the Western side of that.” According to the Acting CEO, RuneScape will always be the studio’s number one priority and that player feedback will always play a big part in any decisions made. Jagex is also looking to acquire new studios, and hopes to come out with a new product within the next five years.

In other Jagex news, their flagship game RuneScape has just turned 15. Check out the story behind the iconic record-breaking MMORPG in the video below.

Blizzard Is Looking For A New Mobile Software Engineer

blizzard irvine hqMobile games have really hit it off these past few years. So much so that big name studios like Blizzard Entertainment have started slicing off their own piece of the pie. The gaming giant has recently put out a job opening for an “enthusiastic software engineer to contribute to Blizzard’s mobile gaming efforts.”

Blizzard has yet to announce what the mobile project is, but speculation is rife that it could be related to Overwatch or Starcraft. Especially with Overwatch’s overwhelming success and the studios efforts to remaster the old Starcraft games. Whatever it is, it’s definitely something for mobile enthusiasts to look forward to. Stay tuned for more details.

If you’re interested in the job opening, you can apply over at the Blizzard Careers page. Also, you might want to watch their “Living in Orange County” video after the break for a glimpse of what’s in store for you if and when you do get the job. Good luck!

Gigantic Fights Against Player Disconnection And Match Abandonment

gigantic tyto

Leavers are a big problem in any game, especially MOBAs like Gigantic. Whether it’s intentional or not, being one man short just isn’t fun for everyone on the team. You’ll also probably lose the match, which makes it even worse. Well, you’ll be happy to know that Motiga is working hard on fixing the issue. The team explains:

“Players leaving matches, dodging queues, or otherwise disrupting the flow of the game is a more interesting and complicated battle, though another we aim to win.

Here’s the problem: players will always have the power when it comes to leaving a match. If they so desire, there’s nothing we can do to prevent them from pulling their ethernet cable out of the wall. (That is, unless they fear being judged from afar…in which case, we judge thee!)

So the question is: what can we do? Fortunately, there are a few approaches we can take to address the problem:

  1. Make it more rewarding for players to participate in (and complete) matches.
  2. Make it less rewarding for players to intentionally leave matches.
  3. Ease the pain for everyone who sticks it out in an imbalanced match.”

Motiga is currently working on a Safe-to-Leave feature which will allow members of an outmanned team to safely leave the match after a certain amount of time without being penalized. The team is also constantly working to resolve server and connection issues to prevent players from being accidentally disconnected during a match.

Back in February, the team also implemented the Honor Bonus system to reward players who stick it out in short-handed matches. The feature was part of Gigantic’s Eternal Dawn update which also included a new hero, new summoned creatures, and a reworked Guardian damage system. Crowfall: Take A Sneak Peek At The Fey Assassin Archetype

crowfall fey assassinThe Crowfall team released a dev blog yesterday that talks about the next planned archetype in the game – the Fey Assassin. Like stereotypical assassin classes, the Fey assassin is stealthy, fast, and deadly. Design Lead Thomas “Blixtev” Blair writes:

“The vision for the Assassin is pretty simple and is pretty much an MMO staple at this point: A stealthy, quick-attacking, stabby-stab type that utilizes poisons and has positional-based attacks; however, as with all of our archetypes, we like to spend some time making each as unique as we can. We also try to leverage a few weeks of tech time to get new features added to the combat system that can then be used across the board for all archetypes.”

The Fey Assassin is also the only archetype with wings which can be used to glide down from heights. Don’t get too excited though. With the team’s “minimum viable powers” approach to developing archetypes, “they are almost guaranteed to change!”, says Blair. They can also be removed entirely so keep your fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, watch the tanky Templar archetype in action below, or glide on over to the Crowfall official site for more details.

Rend Sends Out A Surprise Wave Of Pre-Alpha Invites

rend night floating islandsIn a surprise move earlier this week, Frostkeep Studios sent out their initial wave of pre-alpha invites for their survival sandbox game, Rend. The studio hopes to get more players into the game to help get it into Early Access. If you haven’t signed up for the pre-alpha you can still do so here. Also, keep an eye out for random invites given away on Reddit and Discord.

Frostkeep developer Jordan Leithart also released a dev blog that talks about Rend’s skill and perk system. He writes:

“Today, I’d like to chat about the skills system that we implemented to give another progression and customization avenue. Fans of RPGs will find familiarity with our skills system. The general idea is that the more time you successfully spend doing something, the better you become at it (insert Rocky training montage here). A player who only uses the bow to shoot with should be better than the player who picks up the bow for the first time.”

Stay tuned for more Rend related news. In the meantime, you can watch the official announcement trailer after the break. You can also hop, skip, and jump over to the the game’s official site for more info.

Project Gorgon Working On Improving Visuals

project gorgonFantasy MMORPG Project Gorgon is still in its Alpha stage but development on the game seems to be coming along quite nicely. In a recent dev blog, the team says that they’re hard at work making Serbule look “better”. Project Gorgon developer Citan writes:

“This particular iteration of Serbule is focusing on three things: the textures and models in Serbule city (some of which are already live), the terrain (the grasses, trees, and so on), and the sky. We develop iteratively, so I'm not trying to make the "perfect Serbule" here, just a "better Serbule". And it turns out to be easy to make Serbule look better... the trick is making it look better AND have better framerate -- or at the very least, not-worse framerate.

Graphics work always seems to take vastly longer than I hope it will. Part of that is because it needs to be tested on lots of hardware -- and we don't have a full set of testing hardware, so we also have to try to "simulate" low-end machines, which requires some development work. But it's coming along, slowly but surely. Here's a few screenshots. They're a couple days old, and the game already looks a bit different from these, but it will give you an idea of where we are in the process.”

Check out the screenshots below.

The team is also working on the Brewing skill, which, due to its random nature, has gone through a number of changes and rewrites since the team first blogged about it last week.
