Paragon's New Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Hero Abilities

paragon-new-gameplay-banner

Paragon's latest gameplay video shows off four more heroes rushing to the core to secure victory in Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4 MOBA. With flashy finesse the four heroes display an assortment of skills such as Gideon's Torn Space teleport and Dekker's Containment Fence. The cinematic gameplay is aesthetically captivating, as trailers tend to be.

Players have been raising concerns regarding card packs in the free-to-play MOBA. Instead of buying items players create their own deck of stat-boosting cards before a match (a la Paladins). By collecting in-game currency they can then purchase additional cards. Hence, recent concerns that the game may provide unfair advantages to players with good credit scores. Cards are an easy system to justify microtransactions in games, but Epic Games recently assured Eurogamer that they will never sell card packs in the in-game shop.

There will likely be some microtransactions, but they will include cards as it stands now.

We've heard companies claim "never" before, only to reverse the decision as time passed. But to give the benefit of the doubt, Epic Games seems well-intention to avoid any perception of pay-to-win.

The Division Open Beta Available For PC

the-division-open-beta

The Division Open Beta for PC is live, launching with a new trailer showing off cinematic flare. As I write this post I'm downloading the 26 GB game through Uplay. The PC testing phase coincides with the PS4 Open Beta, and both follow Xbox One's Open Beta, which began yesterday.

Added to the content already seen in the Closed Beta, the Open Beta will include an all new story mission for players to explore in their pursuit to take back New York. As a thank you, everyone who participates will be rewarded with a special in-game reward which will unlock for players when the full game is released.

Testing will end on Monday, February 22nd at 7AM EST / 4AM PST. The developers are streaming The Division on Twitch for the entirety of the beta weekend.

Blade & Soul Unchained Update To Release March 2nd

blade-and-soul-unchained

In a little over a week after Rising Waters went live, Blade and Soul is gearing up for it's next content update, titled Unchained.

The release of Unchained unlocks the final floor of Mushin's Tower (Floor 8). And the Warlock class will be added to the game.

Using mid-range abilities, the Warlock snares their enemies, executes fast and furious combos, and can then summon a massive, demonic Thrall to finish them off.

Thankfully, all players will receive an additional character slot to make room for the Warlock, increasing the total number character slots to 8.

Also included in the update is Naryu Labyrinth, a 3-stage encounter designed to test max level player's skills; groups of 4 and 6 will enter the Heroic Dungeon. Most notably, the dungeon is dynamic, so its elements will change each time players enter the maze. What exactly will be altered remains to be seen.

It's reassuring to see NCSoft consistently roll out updates since the game's release, expanding the game world with each month. I'll be hopping on to test out the Warlock when Unchained releases, will you?

Devilian Update 1.3 Launches, New Tempest Class For $9.99

devilian-tempest-update

Devilian 1.3: Fury of the Tempest has launched, adding two new Archdevil dungeons, level 54 gear sets, a new Raid dungeon, and the Tempest class. While the update is largely free, access to the Tempest class costs $9.99. Locking an additional class behind a paywall isn't nefarious, but it is missing an opportunity to lure players back to the game who grew tired of the available classes.

The heels-toting Tempest does offer stylistic move-sets to reinvigorate my interest in Devilian. But the update's launch is poorly timed. It is facing stiff competition in light of Black Desert Online's CBT2 playtest.

Since launching in December, 2015 Devilian has seen a steady decrease in its population, according to SteamCharts. Perhaps, the update will see those numbers rise once again. We'll know whether or not the Fury of the Tempest is enough to breathe new life into Devilian in the next week.

Watch the Fury of the Tempest Launch Trailer below, and, if interested, head to the Devilian website to purchase the Tempest class.

H1Z1 Has Split Into Two Games

h1z1-splits-two-games-banner

It's official. H1Z1 has split into two games: H1Z1: King of the Hill and H1Z1: Just Survive. Like dividing bacteria in a stagnant pond, both titles will follow their separate paths, each with their own development teams. Players who owned H1Z1 before the cleaving own both copies. But new players can buy each game individually for $19.99.

The divide coincides with an update to both game modes, improving Zombie animation sets, nerfing AK-47 damage, and improves the armor protection of the motorcycle helmet, along with several other improvements.

I guess the next patch will include different improvements that better capture the unique aspects of both game modes? Time will tell.

I still find it hard to understand why one game couldn't include both game modes, but I'm just a guy watching two halves of a zombie meander down different roads. What do I know?

With the announcement comes two new "Teaser" trailers you can watch below.

Jagex Announces Runescape: Idle Adventures

runescape-idle-banner

Jagex has announced Runescape: Idle Adventures, an upcoming idle RPG game for Android, iOS, and PC. The game is being developed in collaboration with Hyper Hippo, the developers behind the popular passive capitalism simulator AdVenture Capitalist.

Chilled-out, low-intensity gameplay sits alongside deep character progression and a light-hearted, comedic story, with nuggets of RuneScape lore unveiled as you progress.

While limited information is available, Jagex did reveal that play sessions will consist of players customizing their hero for a few minutes before unleashing them to quest and fight on their own. Players will be able to check their hero's progress from their tablets, smartphones, and PC's, feeling a sense of satisfaction similar to macroing in Ultima Online.

Runescape: Idle Adventures will be available sometime this Spring, and will be free-to-play.

Black Desert Online CBT2 Is Live

bdo-cbt2

The second Closed Beta test for Black Desert Online is now live. Players can jump in and experience one of the most hyped MMORPGs we've seen at MMOs.com. I'm eagerly awaiting everyone's opinion on Tuesday, after CBT2 has ended.

The test is scheduled to run:

18th of February at 08:00 UTC: servers open.
22nd of February at 08:00 UTC: servers close.

More classes have been added since the last closed beta. Players can choose between Warrior, Ranger, Sorceress, Berserker, Valkyrie, Tamer, Wizard, and Witch. I'll be dabbling with each of them to see which one I like best.

A patch has been released coinciding with the start of CBT2, making numerous changes to Pets, Costumes, and Housing (with too many to list here). Level cap has been raised from 50 to 55, PvP is enabled from level 45 onward, and Guild Wars is in the game.

As it stands costumes and pets in the cash shop are priced fairly high. Whether or not the prices are the same when the game releases remains to be seen.

BDO will release on March 03, 2016 and it will be buy-to-play.

Cabal Online Launches On Steam

cabal-online

Fantasy MMORPG Cabal Online has officially launched on Steam. Cabal Online originally launched in Korea in 2005, and graced Western shores in February, 2008. It's the most recent older title to make its way to the Steam store alongside game such as Lucent Heart, Knight Online, and Granado Espada. Whether or not offering Cabal Online on the Steam platform bolsters its numbers is anyone's guess.

Cabal Online is known for its PvP gameplay. At level 52 players are given the option of joining one of two factions and participate in daily PvP events.

While Cabal Online is an older game, it is a classic MMORPG with a core audience. However, it is not an easy game for newcomers. But perhaps you'll find something to enjoy in Cabal Online, or at least find satisfaction in participating in a game that's part of the genre's history.

The Weekly Raid: What Does Pay-To-Win Mean To You?

bdo-pay2win

Black Desert Online's cash shop spawned heated debates around the web during the CBT2 weekend, centered on cash shop shenanigans. Browsing forum posts, and articles, I see players raising concerns regarding overpriced cosmetics and debates about whether or not items such as skill resets (only available in the cash shop) provide a significant advantage. But no one seems to ask what exactly constitutes the term "pay-to-win."

Where is the line in the sand between acceptable cash shop practices and a pay-to-win scheme? Or, are all cash shops inherently pay-to-win? The question is undoubtedly contentious with passions flaring no matter who's voicing their thoughts.

Lately, I'm somewhat convinced that there are degrees of pay-to-win, so that a game like Golden Rush sits on the pay-to-win throne whereas Devilian is the bottom tier of pay-to-win, motivating microtransactions by annoying players with limited bag space and character slots.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on pay-to-win. And I doubt a majority consensus will be reached anytime soon.
